In 1942, at the height of her Hollywood career, Lamarr and her composer friend George Antheil invented and patented an early technique of spread spectrum communications called "frequency hopping" that was decades ahead of its time. Originally conceived for the purpose of torpedo guidance, frequency hopping technology has been necessary to wireless communication from the pre-computer age to the present day.
