CADENCE

Dmitri Matheny Group at the Florence Gould Theater
By Stuart Kremsky
May 1, 1997

Flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny was at the intimate space of the Florence Gould Theatre at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor on 4/12. With John Heller (g), Bill Douglass (b), Mark Taylor (Fr hn) and Jason Lewis (d), with Rich Corrigan (acc) walking on for one tune.  Playing mostly original compositions, plus one apiece by Tom Harrell and Lee Morgan, the group offered tasteful and effortless swing anchored by Lewis’ loose pulse and the sparkling interplay of Matheny and long-time cohort Heller. The warm blend of flugel and French horn was just right for the emotional atmosphere of the material. Matheny will be in Monterey 6/14, with a West Coast tour planned for July.

Dmitri Matheny presented the first part of his Moon Song Trilogy 6/28 at Noe Valley Ministry and the second part 7/28 at the SF Jazz Festival’s big Jazz & Wine Festival; the third part will be premiered and recorded at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September.
