- Join us at SACRED GROUNDS on DECEMBER 9, 2010 for CELEBRATING CLARK TERRY, a 90th Birthday Bash honoring one of the most beloved musicians in the world of jazz.
An early pioneer of jazz flugelhorn, Clark Terry is world-renowned as a trumpeter, educator and recording artist.
The recipient of thirteen honorary doctorates, Mr. Terry has performed for seven U.S. Presidents and has received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship, our country's highest honor for jazz artists.
Mr. Terry has penned more than two hundred compositions and has published three books on applied brass technique: Let's Talk Trumpet: From Legit to Jazz, Interpretation of the Jazz Language, and Clark Terry's System of Circular Breathing for Woodwind and Brass Instruments.
Lauded as an American hero for helping to break the color barrier at NBC, Clark Terry was hired by the network as a studio musician in 1960 and went on to become one of the best-loved soloists in the Tonight Show Band.
A former "Jazz Ambassador" for State Department tours to Africa and the Middle East, Clark Terry has received many honors abroad, including the German Imperial Medal of Knighthood and the French Ordre National des Arts et des Lettres. Mr. Terry's statue and star on the Walk of Fame are enshrined in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.
Terry's discography boasts over 300 recordings as a bandleader and as a soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra, Dutch Metropole Orchestra, Chicago Jazz Orchestra, Duke Ellington Orchestra, Count Basie Orchestra, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Dinah Washington, Ben Webster, Charlie Barnet, Doc Severinsen, Ray Charles, Billy Strayhorn, Dexter Gordon, Thelonious Monk, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Coleman Hawkins, Zoot Sims, Milt Jackson, Bob Brookmeyer, Jon Faddis, and Dianne Reeves, as well as with dozens of collegiate and high school student ensembles.
Clark Terry's storied career and invaluable contributions to world culture were feted earlier this year when the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences awarded him the 2010 Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement.
