NEWS

Come to a DMITRI MATHENY GROUP show in 2012-2013 and you're likely to witness Crime Scenes, my jazz arrangements of espionage and underworld movie music. Drawing on classic themes from film noir, B-movies, spy thrillers and crime dramas, each song is presented as a dreamlike flashback to a particular "scene." In concert, the individual scenes are conceptually linked together to form a story with voiceover narration in the hard-boiled detective style of Raymond Chandler. It's killer.

On April 27, I will appear in San Francisco as a guest soloist with the INTERLOCHEN ARTS ACADEMY jazz and motion picture arts tour. The concert at the SF Jewish Community Center's Kanbar Hall is part of a national series celebrating the academy's 50th anniversary season.

On April 29, the DMITRI MATHENY GROUP will appear at THE JAZZSCHOOL in Berkeley, California.

From May 1-5, I will visit schools in Ashland, Oregon as Artist-in-Residence with the SISKIYOU INSTITUTE. The week-long residency concludes with a concert May 5 at PASCHAL WINERY & VINEYARD in Talent with a quintet featuring guitarist Ed Dunsavage and vocalist Leslie Kendall.

On May 6, I will appear at Bliss Bar in San Francisco as a guest soloist with TANGO NO. 9: Joshua Raoul Brody on piano, Isabel Douglass on accordion & bandoneon, Greg Stephens on trombone and bandleader Catharine Clune on violin. The quartet recorded my composition "Sea of Tranquility" on their acclaimed 2007 album Here Live No Fish.

On May 31, the DMITRI MATHENY GROUP will appear at Sacred Grounds Jazz Coffeehouse in Scottsdale AZ. The band features Andrew Gross, tenor saxophone; Nick Manson, piano; Ted Sistrunk, bass and John Lewis, drums.

My latest CD release is GRANT & MATHENY, an intimate "chamber jazz" project with longtime duo partner, pianist Darrell Grant. All 9 of my albums as a leader are available now from CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and Carpe DM.

From time to time I have the opportunity to provide original music for films and digital media. I'm honored that author Derek Sivers has licensed my composition "Emerald Buddha" for bundling with his wonderful new e-book ANYTHING YOU WANT.

I've been working with the nonprofit Jazz in AZ to develop education program plans for the new LEWIS NASH JAZZ IN AZ CENTER. The facility is on schedule to open March 2012 in the Roosevelt Row arts district of downtown Phoenix.
